Incredible Rainfall Totals

For the second time this summer (the first was July 7th) the combination of deep tropical moisture combined with a strong low level jet stream to produce remarkable – in many cases, damaging – rainfall totals on the Cape.

Last night upwards of 8 inches of rain fell in parts of Orleans and Eastham resulting in flooding and areas of damage around the Cape.

Here are the rainfall totals recorded by the CoCoRaHS observers:

  1. I have a conical garden rain gauge in North Eastham, calibrated to 5.5 in., but filled to the top this AM (19 Aug) > 1 in. above the 5.5-in. mark. Also a 33-gal. trash barrel, which had the top blown off has 11 in. in it, but some of that could be overflow from a gutter above. So at least 7.5 in. in Eastham! (I am a retired hydrologist, Ph.D.)

    1. It was amazing. Thankful that our topography and soil is what it is…or that would have been a devastating flood event.
