The combination of a weak warm front and an associated developing low pressure center will help spread some light precipitation into Southern New England tonight and Tuesday – bringing us some light accumulating snow just in time for the morning commute.
Initially, the atmosphere will be cold enough to support frozen precipitation across the entire area – so as precipitation develops from south to north tonight it should be in the form of snow just about everywhere. With cold surface temperatures, snow will have no trouble sticking and untreated sidewalks, driveways and roadways will become slick and snow-covered overnight.
Eventually (around sunrise here on the Cape) milder air both at the surface and aloft will lift into the area, changing light snow over to a light mix of precipitation and then to light rain (along coastal areas) Tuesday morning. Across interior Southern New England, precipitation will stay as light snow throughout the event, yielding several inches of accumulation. Here on the Cape, a general 1 to 2 inches of snow may accumulate before we flip to light rain.
