Backdoor Cold Front

‘Tis the season. High pressure near Hudson Bay is working in tandem with low pressure over the central part of the country to produce a textbook “backdoor cold front” situation for New England. As mild air is being punched northward toward the Great Lakes, low level cold air is draining southwestward from Quebec and Nova Scotia toward New England. The result is a quintessential spring set up here in eastern Massachusetts, with a wind blowing in off the water and chilly, dank conditions. You can see the backdoor front very nicely on satellite imagery this morning. Winds have turned to the northeast across most of the region, with just the western half of Connecticut still enjoying sunshine and a warm southwest wind.
